As any significant prize-giving event draws close, one notices an outcry to include of new categories to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial and important of all. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of video games, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Consider three of this year’s best games, each quite distinct: structural challenges from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game received no recognition completely in 2014
- Another imaginative release received no nominations that year
- Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
- Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games rank among most popular titles in the world and have been for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging with diverse game types.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
To emphasize again, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge game development, developing some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
